Position type
This position is a one-year contract (with the possibility of renewal).
Hours
The position is the equivalent of three days per week (days/hours will be set to suit both the individual and the BPC).
Position summary
As the sole staff member of the BPC, the Managing Director will report to the Board of Directors and is responsible for successfully overseeing the day-to-day operations of the organization while ensuring the organization meets its goals. Day-to-day operations include the organization and execution of all existing BPC programs, including Learning &Development Webinars, the Group Benefits Plan, and the Freight and Distribution Plan. The Managing Director will maintain an organized accounting system and complete an annual audit. (A bookkeeper can be contracted for bookkeeping if preferable.) Additionally, the Managing Director will work with the Board of Directors to organize monthly meetings, prepare monthly financial and operational reports, and deliver an Annual General Meeting in the fall.
With the support of the Board of Directors, the Managing Director will also be responsible for evaluating the sustainability of the BPC’s existing programs and services, and reviewing and updating existing policies, procedures, recordkeeping, and file storage.
In addition, the Managing Director will be responsible for financial reporting, governance, and administrative work.
As the BPC enters an era with renewed focus on member programs and services, the ideal candidate will be an innovative and strategic thinker who is a self-starting, highly organized, process-oriented individual with strong communication and administrative skills, an interest in writing and publishing, and a commitment to equity work.
As the sole employee of the BPC, the individual must thrive in an independent work environment and be comfortable with a structured accountability framework.
Location
This is a fully remote position open to residents of Ontario who are eligible to work in Canada. Occasional travel to Toronto is required.
Key responsibilities
Admin, governance, and finance
Facilitate monthly BOD meetings with financial & operational reporting
Organize and oversee online AGM
Oversee and support bookkeeping (for candidates with strong financial skills and an interest in maintaining the day-to-day books, additional hours and compensation can be discussed and negotiated)
Review, update, and maintain file storage, recordkeeping, policies, and procedures
With the bookkeeper and auditor, complete the annual audit
Administer and maintain membership records including invoicing and receipts
Program and service delivery
Organize and execute Learning & Development Webinars
Maintain existing grant, corporate sponsor, and partner relationships
Administer the BPC Group Health Benefits program
Organize and execute the 2025 Annual General Meeting
Communications
Provide regular communications to members on programs and services
Maintain website (Wordpress/Squarespace)
Manage other communication tools as required
Strategy, research, and development
Evaluate the sustainability of the BPC’s existing programs and services, and research alternatives
Track and report on outcomes of programs, services, and initiatives
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
Excellent organizational, time management, and prioritization skills;
Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills;
Ability to work independently;
Excellent administrative skills;
Clear, strong, and persuasive written and oral communication skills;
Experience with remote work, using Google Workspace or similar platform;
Demonstrated experience overseeing non-profit accounting and finance;
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple programs and priorities;
Experience working with a not-for-profit board;
Experience with grant writing;
Experience in or familiarity with the publishing sector or larger arts community; and
Bookkeeping skills and/or web development experience would be an asset

Compensation
The salary range for this three-day a week position is $40,000 - $45,000 in addition to comprehensive health and dental benefits. In addition, the BPC offers paid sick days, paid vacation, and paid time off during the annual year-end closure (December 24 to January 2).
